Adium being the cool people that they are have added facebook chat to adium, at first I thought this would be something rather trivial but actually its proved really quite useful. And a great way to see who’s online to quickly run ideas past. if your on a mac head on over to http://www.adiumx.com/ and download the latest version. Oh and also there is now sykpe support which is quite useful (but unfortunately needs skype to be open at the same time which sucks a bit)

A bit of a sneak peak at my latest project involving some crazy typography. It’s so soul destroying having to justify and then kern a block of text only to have to distort it afterwards, hopefully it’ll be worth it at the end though.

On Thursday, 28 August 2008, BT accidentally cancelled our broadband connection, leaving us without an internet connection for a full week while we were being “re-provisioned”.

In order to make being cut-off from the virtual world more bearable, we created our own local internet, out of files that were on our harddrives, and some argue it was actually better than the real thing. Make up your own mind, because as a tribute to the week we had, hi-res.net is being replaced with

It least its saving fuel I guess. But next time you think about breaking the law remember you could be getting chased (well followed slowly) by one of these.

The piece of software that we were shown was nothing huge, nothing complicated, just a simple RSS reader. Some of you might be reading this on one right now, for those of you that aren’t let me briefly explain.

An RSS feed takes a source in the web and separates the content from the format, in really simple terms it takes some of the words and some of the pictures from a website and puts it into a ‘feed’. This means that you can collect lots of information from lots of different sources in one place in this case a RSS reader.

At first I thought this simple program would be useful but to be honest I kept finding myself leaving it to look at the actual webpage, mainly due to familiarity rather then anything else. After a while though I started to change the way I used it, I started to expand the number of feeds I had and checking it in the morning became as natural as checking your emails.

At this point I had about 25 feeds all from Ravensbourne design blogs, this began to change, I started adding more feed from various places. I started to notice that a lot of website that I liked to check had RSS feeds that I had never noticed and I began to add these.

Eventually my 25 had become 50 and instead of just being Ravensbourne design blogs they were now from a combination of design, photography and news sources.

Then I started using them to keep up to date with research that I was conducting/collecting for projects that I was working on. and before I knew it I had near to 100 feeds that I was able to keep up to date with. I found that instead of stumbling about trying to find inspiration for things that I was doing, or planning, I was tripping over it all. Every day brings with it a whole host of things I’d never read about or designers I’d never seen I think I can honestly say that having an RSS reader has changed the way I approach a lot of things and for that I am grateful.

So why not try it. Download this. Add a couple of feeds from here and here and then see where it takes you. You never know in a few months maybe you won’t be able to live without it either.

Now I just need a way to keep tract of all my ideas, suggestions welcome.
